Fur real. That's what this book is, and that's how I try to practice medicine.

I'm a small-animal veterinarian. Horses pretty much terrify me, although I love a nice cow or alpaca, and goats make me laugh — but I've left their medicine to others since I graduated vet school, thankyouvermuch.

Many of us go to the vet and then leave. We've paid for our exam, our vaccines, and our preventatives, and then we go on with our lives. An annual visit, like we do with our kids and theoretically with ourselves. We don't think much about it beyond the hassle of transporting our furry friend.

For others it's a more intense relationship. The veterinary office becomes a place of kindness and compassion, there for us when we are scared, upset, or devastated by things that affect our beloved family members.

What we may not consider, as we walk into this building that contains so much, is what that people inside are dealing with daily. Your struggle with bad news, scary news, uncertainty, and fear — those are things we deal with every single day.

I wrote this book because I want you to absorb not just the information that will help your pet, but also the knowledge that the people caring for your pets need care as well. It's not a memoir, exactly. It's based largely on my experiences and opinions, and your vet might not agree with everything I say. But I'm pretty darned confident in what I'm saying — speaking with confidence is part of the gig.

INSIGHTS
“Understanding your vet’s challenges can strengthen the bond between you and your pet’s healthcare provider. Knowledge fosters compassion, essential for both pet owners and veterinarians to thrive together.”
